VERA I ERŽIKA

This movie night will be dedicated to the position of women in the socialist period, between modernization, emancipation and traditional values.

CHERCHEZ LA FEMME

This short documentary/TV essay was created as a part of the “People to People” series in which 12 European countries presented their films. In the words of Hrvoje Turković, Berković’s film plays with the relationship between concrete images and the grandiosity of a traditional ideological commentary.

VERA AND ERŽIKA

The two movie protagonists, Vera and Eržika, have worked at the Trudbenik textile factory in Pančevo from the age of thirteen. Preparing for retirement, they face numerous issues and misunderstandings: according to the provisions of the newly adopted Pensions Act, only the work they have performed since the age of fifteen is recognized as pensionable service. In order to exercise their right to receive a pension, the two now formally lack two years of service.

Taking this issue as the source of dramatic conflict, the film explores the emotional states of the protagonists and their families, their relationships with their co-workers and an entire series of moods and worries troubling people whose working lives have come to an end.

CHIARA BONFIGLIOLI, a post-doctoral fellow at the Centre for Cultural and Historical Research of Socialism (Pula). She holds a BA in Political Sciences from the University of Bologna and an MA and PhD from the History and Culture Institute (Gender Studies Programme) in Utrecht. Her doctoral dissertation explores women’s political and social activism in Italy and Yugoslavia during the Cold War (1945 – 1957). For the past two years, she has been examining the effect of post-socialist transition and deindustrialization on gender relations in former Yugoslavia, with a special emphasis on workers in textile industry.
